Blue Keiyaki (Zelkova) and Teak pens

The first two pictures are the front and back of a pen made from blue keiyaki, also known as "zelkova". The wood was sent to me by a woodworking friend in Tokyo.

The next two pictures are side views of 2 pens made from teak. The wood was salvaged from a boat restoration project being done by a woodworker in coastal NC.

Are the innards available somewhere or do you have to dismantle other pens? By the way they are beautiful.

This story has made me feel guilty. I recieved a wooden pen set from some employees many years ago. I have no idea what kind of wood from which they were made. It is possible it was some rare wood, I don't know. They got discarded along with other office odds and ends. Can you mark your pens to state how rare they are so they do not get indiscrimatly thrown away.

The pen innards come as a kit. I order at least 10 at a time. Making the pens isn't difficult and doesn't take very much time, so I tend to do several at a time. This past wekend I did 3 in one day (couple of hours) and if the red keiyaki wood hadn't blown apart it would have been 4.

Dad,
From your description I know exactly what type of wood that was...dunno wood. So I guess I shouldn't give you a pen for Christmas?

The metal twist mechanism inside a pen can be marked with a fine tip Sharpie marker. Or I can hang a little string/tag on the end clip. Or put in a plastic bag with a note (the pen KIT comes in a plastic bag and I currently put the finished pen in that).
